Brief
History and Background |

Our Bureau was established in 1994 and is based on experts from
the E.O.Paton Electric Welding Institute in Kiev with long-term
experience in patent branch. This Institute was one of the largest
centers of applied research and technology in the former Soviet
Union (more then 7000 employers, including 3000 in R&D alone)
and also one of world leaders in the field of welding and related
topics (about 1500 foreign patents). Also experts which have
a knowledge in modern technology and wide experience in R&D,
innovations, and protection of industrial property were invited
from other institutions. |

We provide an identification of patentable inventions, drafting
and filing of application for patents for inventions, utility
models, industrial designs and trade marks, conduct of an examination
proceedings before the Patent Office, portfolio management,
drafting of assignment or licensing contracts, management of
client’s disputes in respect of intellectual property,
consultations etc. We have experience both in traditional and
in high technologies: materials, treatments of materials, especially
all kinds of welding of almost all materials anywhere including
space and underwater, metallurgy, engineering, mechanics, electronics,
informatics and telecommunications, optoelectronics, lasers,
optics, instrumentation, chemistry, biotechnology, medicine,
food and packing technology and others. |

It is notorious that in the Soviet Union all kinds of activity
were strictly centralized and especially any contacts with abroad
were prerogative of Moscow. This is a reason why that time nobody
from Paton Institute’s Patent Office processing about 400
applications for inventions annually had any contact with patent
firms and patent attorneys in West in spite of the fact that
Paton Institute has received many hundreds patents in foreign
countries. Though our Patent Office drafted all applications
and amendments for these patents the information exchange with
patent firms and patent attorneys abroad was carried out via
Sojuzpatent in Moscow. We sent all materials of application
to Moscow and then the Sojuzpatent sent them abroad. So we could
learn what foreign firm assisted us in filing of application
and granting of patent only after receiving of patent by our
Institute. We could not choose partners abroad: the Sojuzpatent
did it. As a rule number of these firms was 3-4 per country,
for example, all Paton Institute’s patent in United Kingdom
were obtained via 4 British firms. |

Since 1991 when Ukraine became an independent state with land
mass about 604 thousands sq. km and population 52 millions people
we started to establish direct contacts with world patent community.
Right after disintegration of the Soviet Union old partners
of Sojuzpatent continued to apply for patents in Ukraine through
the mediation of Sojuzpatent or through patent firms in Moscow
established by Sojuzpatent which hire Ukrainian patent firms
and Ukrainian patent attorneys to do it. |

Today our Bureau provides more simple, more short, more fast
and reliable way for representation of applicants from abroad
before State Patent Office of Ukraine and for all aspects of
protection of rights for industrial property in Ukraine. Direct
access to Internet allows us to communicate electronically with
our partners and clients around the world. Good knowledge of
foreign languages enables our experts to review original foreign
applications in English, German and French immediately after
they are received in hard copies by fax or by mail or in digital
form by E-mail. We have good experience with filing and processing
of applications from USA, Germany, France, Great Britain, Sweden,
Brazil, Norway, Australia and other countries for Ukrainian
patents and trade mark registration both directly and according
to PCT (entry to the national phase). |

On the other hand since our Bureau based on experts with long-term
experience in Patent Office of Paton Institute that has very
high reputation for many years we continue to provide different
services for dozens of inventors and applicants from Paton
Institute itself which remain our largest client, from many
its ventures, and also for net of our other clients through
all Ukraine. These services include not only protection of
right for inventions, utility models, designs, and trade marks
in Ukraine but often also application for their protection
abroad. Just now we deal with applications of Ukrainian applicants
for European patents, for patents of USA, Germany, Japan,
Canada, Korea, Sweden, Finland, France, Switzerland, China,
Italy, Russia and other countries.
